Whether you’re thinking about installing extra large tires or just want a better view of the road, consider getting a lift kit. But lift kits aren’t one size fits all. We’ll explain what you should know about them before deciding on the right one for your truck. If you’re interested in lifting your ride in Mountain View, CA, or the surrounding areas, give Griffin’s Auto Repair / Level Up Auto Styling a call.

Consider Why You Want a Lift Kit

Think about your reasons for getting a lift kit. Do you prefer style over functionality? Certain lift kits are made to enhance off-road driving by raising a vehicle’s ground clearance, while other types are purely for aesthetic purposes. The three main lift kit styles are leveling, coilover, and drop-down.

Leveling kits are often the most cost-effective and the easiest to install. They are made to lift the front of your vehicle by one or two inches so it is level with the back. These kits are mainly for looks but they can also offer more clearance if you plan to add larger tires.

Coilover kits are a bit pricier but can add two to three inches of lift. Most lift kits are installed using struts, but a coilover lifts the truck with a shock that has a spring around it. This makes it easier to customize a truck’s suspension for either off-road or on-road use.

When you really want to go high, consider a drop-down kit. These are the most expensive kits around, but they offer as much as six inches of lift.

Driving Feels Different

After getting your vehicle lifted, the center of gravity changes. This means your truck is more likely to sway or tip when going around corners. Take turns slowly to avoid tipping over. Keep in mind that your lift kit also requires a bit of maintenance. Periodically check how tight the kit’s bolts are to ensure there is no slack.
